The International Institute for Peace organised in cooperation with the Russian Cultural Institute and the Embassy of Venezuela an international symposium on "Oil and Security". The sponsorship was taken over by the oil companies ROSNEFT (Russia), OMV (Austria) and PDVSA (Venezuela).
The intention was to have a discussion on a topic, which today seems to be more important then ever, i.e. the context between oil (energy supply), peace and security.
What problems are to be derived oil as a strategic commodity: for those in possession of it, for the consumer countries and for those having military and economic power? What consequences originate for the security structures on regional and global level? What must be done for security in the energy sector? And what is the economic dimension of the consequences in the relationship between energy supply and security?
